Cold weather has returned and it’s time to turn up the heat! Most furnaces get a 4 to 7 months break during the warm weather months, and as many as 1 in 50 furnaces won’t restart come fall. Don’t be left out in the cold!
Here are a few simple steps you can take today to stay warm this winter:
Don’t Wait
Test your heat once or twice during the warm weather months. If you find that there is a problem with your furnace, call a contractor and have it serviced as soon as possible. This way, you aren’t put on a waiting list in the fall when everyone else discovers that their furnace has failed.
Inspect Your Heating System Annually
A furnace is no different than a car – it needs maintenance! Have your HVAC system inspected annually to make sure it functions and runs well. Be sure that the inspector examines the ignition source, gas pressure, oil filter (for oil furnaces), and all other key components of the system.
Kick the Tires
If your furnace doesn’t start, there are a few things you can do at home before calling a contractor. Ensure the thermostat is set to “Heat” mode. You may be surprised to learn that this is the #1 cause of “No Heat” service calls. Has your breaker tripped? Check the circuit breaker panel to make sure it hasn’t tripped. If you have an oil furnace be sure to check the tank, is there oil in the tank?
When to Call a Contractor
When in doubt, call a contractor. The most important thing is to have a problem or potential problem addressed as soon as possible, and hopefully not when it becomes cold! Beware that contractors increase their rates as demand for their services rises.
