7 Ways to Cool Off a Hot Spot in Your Home

On the hottest summer days, it can be difficult for the AC system to keep upwith the demands of the house. Many homeowners struggle with certain areas of the home becoming too hot to enjoy by the late afternoon. This may be the result of a poorly functioning unit, or a bad install job. No matter what the reason, here are a few tips to help you cool off those hot spots:

  1. Keep the Shades Closed on the Sunny Side: Be sure to shutter the window shades, curtains, or other window coverings on the west side of the home. The west side is where the sun is strongest in the afternoon.
  2. Plant Shade Trees around the Home: Adding shade around the home can make a big difference in home cooling costs. Trees also help to reduce storm water runoff and flooding near your home.
  3. Add a Small Room Air Conditioner: Window units or small portable air conditioner are an affordable way to take the edge off a room during the summer months.
  4. Add New Supply Air Vents to Hot Rooms: This may not be a DIY project but if your duct system is easily accessible, purchase a few bags of 6″ R8 flex duct and add a run or two! Any handyman should be able to complete the job for less than $100 if you do not feel comfortable doing it yourself. Please don’t close off rooms and shut the vents. It can cause dangerous build-ups of moisture and heat in your HVAC system.
  5. Balance the System with Zoning Dampers: If you don’t want to install new duct run, purchase inexpensive zone dampers and adjust the system manually by channeling more airflow into the hot spots of your home!
  6. Insulate the Attic on the Hot Side: Adding insulation can be a game-changer. Add more to the hot side to help reduce hot spots.
  7. Install an Attic Vent Fan:If your attic is more than 20 degrees hotter than the outside temperature on a hot day, you may benefit from an attic vent fan! Check out solar attic fans (about $200) or gable attic fans (about $50) on either of our sister sites to learn more about how an attic vent can help you!
